Using SharkBite Fittings Behind Walls
Behind-the-Wall Proven & Approved
Approved by the Uniform Plumbing Code, International Plumbing Code, and National Plumbing Code of Canada, properly installed SharkBite fittings offer permanent connections, says Product Manager Michael Kornegay. The fittings aren’t intended to be disconnected and reconnected repeatedly. In fact, the only way to properly remove SharkBite fittings is to use the SharkBite disconnect tongs and disconnect clips.
“We know it might seem too good to be true, but SharkBite has been approved by IAPMO for behind-the-wall installation,” Kornegay says. “The products have been manufactured and used in Australia since the 1990s; it’s been around long enough with no issues in behind-the-wall installations.”
Specifically, the IAPMO listing states, the product “can be utilized in underground applications and as manufactured joints without access panels.” The product also is in compliance with ASSE 1061-2015 and NSF/ANSI 14-2016.
SharkBite fittings are backed by a 25-year warranty “as long as it’s installed correctly and compliant with local code,” says Kornegay.
Unlike other push-to-connect fitting brands, SharkBite owns its manufacturing process from start to finish. This ensures that products are manufactured with the highest quality materials. SharkBite push-to-connect fittings are made of lead-free brass and have an EPDM O-ring and a stainless steel 316 grab ring. Their push-to-connect design makes for quick and easy installation and they’re compatible with PEX, copper, CPVC, PE-RT and SDR-9 HDPE pipe. There are no special tools, crimping, glue or soldering required.
Using Push-to-Connect in Behind-The-Wall Applications
Since SharkBite fittings require no glue or soldering, water can be turned back on, and lines tested, immediately after plumbing is installed. This means that your customer’s water supply would be available much sooner than if your team used traditional plumbing methods. And faster install time and ease of use will reduce installation errors.
