4 Reasons SharkBite Fittings Leak & How to Avoid Them
️Experiencing a leak with a SharkBite fitting? In most cases, the issue can be traced back to one of three installation errors.
1. Problem: Pipe wasn't fully inserted.
✅ Solution: Mark the correct insertion depth on the pipe and fully insert the fitting to that mark. Use the SharkBite Max Depth & Deburr Tool to measure and mark the depth.
2. Problem: Pipe wasn't properly prepared.
✅ Solution: Cut the pipe squarely and deburr it to remove rough edges and debris. Use PRO PEX Cutters when cutting PEX pipe and the SharkBite Max Depth & Deburr Tool to deburr any pipe type.
️3. Problem: Pipe is pulling on the fitting connection.
✅ Solution: Properly support the pipe with HoldRite pipe supports to anchor the pipe so it can seat properly in the fitting.
4. Problem: Too many disconnections.
✅ Solution: SharkBite fittings are designed for permanent connections, but not repeated connection and disconnection. We recommend disconnecting fittings only once, otherwise you may have a loose connection.

Proper Installation Steps
SharkBite keeps the connection process straightforward: cut, deburr and mark, push and done. Each step helps you confirm that the connection has been made correctly.
1. Cut the pipe square
Make a clean, straight cut and remove loose material. An angled or damaged pipe can interfere with the seal.
2. Deburr and mark the pipe
Deburr the pipe with the SharkBite Max Depth and Deburr Tool, then remove any debris. Use the tool to measure the correct insertion depth and mark it with a permanent marker. This mark is your most useful installation check since it shows exactly how far the pipe needs to go into the fitting.

3. Push the pipe to the tube stop
Push the fitting firmly onto the pipe with a slight twisting motion until the pipe reaches the internal stop. Check the insertion-depth mark to confirm that the pipe is fully seated.
4. Check and test the connection
Before closing a wall or finishing the project, turn the water back on and inspect the connection for leaks.
The Bottom Line
SharkBite fittings simplify permanent plumbing connections, but proper installation is the key to long-lasting, leak-free performance. Simply cut the pipe square, deburr rough edges, and remove any debris. Mark the correct insertion depth, then push the pipe into the fitting until it reaches the tube stop. Finish by inspecting and testing the connection to confirm a secure, leak-free seal.
