How To: Use SharkBite Max Depth and Deburr Tool
SharkBite fittings are quick and easy to use, but without correct installation, they could leave you with leaks. The two main ways to avoid failed connections are to deburr your pipe and insert your fitting to the correct insertion depth. Here’s why:
A rough pipe could puncture the o-ring of your fitting and prevent a complete, even seal from forming. This will let water escape, causing leaks that could have been prevented. To avoid this issue, cut your pipe squarely and evenly, deburr the pipe thoroughly and wipe off any leftover debris. Use our SharkBite Max Depth and Deburr Tool to quickly and easily deburr the pipe.
An improperly seated fitting is when a fitting is not pushed far enough onto the pipe. This prevents the pipe from reaching the tube stop inside the fitting, so it’s only making a partial seal. To get a reliable connection every time, use our updated Depth and Deburr tool to measure the correct insertion depth and mark the pipe. This tool is compatible with SharkBite Max and SharkBite (1st generation), so it measures the correct insertion depth for whichever fitting you use.

Our latest innovation, the SharkBite Max Depth and Deburr Tool, makes it easier than ever to make a secure, leak-free connection when installing SharkBite fittings. It’s equipped with the correct insertion depths for both SharkBite Max and SharkBite (1st generation) fittings and is compatible with ½”, ¾ “ and 1” pipes. Use it on PEX, copper, CPVC and PE-RT pipes.
To use, select the correct side of the tool according to your generation of fitting and the size of your pipe. Once you’ve found the correct orientation of the tool, insert it onto your pipe and rotate it clockwise at least ten times. Make sure your pipe has been cut squarely prior to deburring. Then, simply mark your pipe to the insertion depth noted on your tool. Once the pipe is deburred and marked, remove any excess debris, like shards of copper. Now, you’re ready to insert your fitting to the insertion depth line.
