Word of warning: DO NOT buy I love shark bite fittings, I have used them before and will continue to use them. The issue with the lines is not the shark bite side, its the rubber washer on the threaded side. When the FIP fitting is tightened there is no collar on the ID of the flex pipe to keep the washer from over compressing. I went through 2 sets of these lines, each time same thing. Under compression the rubber washer tears and begins to leak. One of these fittings held for 8 days before doing so. I'm not saying all flex lines with rubber washers don't work, just know that these rubber washers will fail over time and temperature cycles

Prefacing this with my disdain for sweating pipes--not because I disagree with the practice but because I'm not terribly efficient and I waste a lot of solder--I had high hopes for this product. I am a big fan of SharkBite products and use them frequently on a number of projects. When it came time to replace my hot water heater and I was gathering the materials, I came across this set and instantly purchased it. True to expectation, they were a breeze to install. Just cut the old pipe and push these on. After a successful installation, I turned on the new unit and set it to 120 degrees. A few hours later I heard beeping coming from the basement and upon inspection I found water leaking heavily from the seal on the hot water outlet terminal.   Assuming I received a defective unit, I returned the kit and replaced it, only to discover that the second one leaked at the same location as well.  Rather than replace it, I adjusted the water temperature to 115 degrees and surprisingly the leak stopped.  It hasn't leaked since, and it's been six months.  I still use the unit, but would advise caution to anyone who likes to keep their hot water heaters on higher temperatures.

I was worried about having to solder a new section of copper pipe for my replacement water heater. I have used other SharkBite connectors before, so I was confident when I saw it available in these premade kits. I got home, cut the pipes and pushed these on and I was all set in about 10 minutes. No leaking whatsoever.

I had considered putting together "pieces" (pex, connectors and shut off valve) including using SharkBite connectors but when I saw this kit available it was an immediately solution to what needed to be done. It was easy to install and made the job turn out extremely professional. I am very pleased.

Everything depends on having the right piping with the right size at the right locations, though. In my case, the original piping above my water heater was badly corroded because of galvanic metal corrosion. This happens with dissimilar metals (like copper and galvanized steel), and the result after a couple years is fittings that are in such bad shape that they are at risk of failure and leaking. The original job was done by a union plumbing shop, who should have known better. Cutting the copper at the right locations went fine, bending the new flexible connectors to meet at the right locations went fine, but the existing nipple at the water heater had to be replaced, and I used a regular short galvanized nipple. That's where I had trouble. Everything went fine with no leaks until the next day. Seems that the new nipple was not sufficiently rounded to avoid cutting into the rubber gasket washer from the new connector. I had a bit of water to clean up. Another problem was that a new gasket washer was nowhere to be found. I don't think that Sharkbite makes a replacement. There are some other brands available at Home Depot, but not the quality of the original. The sharp nipple cutting into the gasket washer isn't Sharkbites fault, but failing to warn me is, and failing to provide a means to obtain a replacement is as well. For these reasons, I'm dropping the rating down. With a tentative recommendation of the product only for new installations.

How to install on 3/4 in tubing? Does plastic insert get used or discarded?

Asked by: poorbroker
Good morning, Cut the pipe Deburr the pipe (if copper) Mark the insertion depth (1-1/8") Slide the fitting completely onto the pipe (up to the mark for the insertion) Done You should leave our stiffeners in the pipe no matter what type of pipe you are using. If you want to remove them with copper or CPVC, you can, but we recommend just leaving them in.

Can I use with polybutylene water pipe?

Asked by: Fdec49
Hello, The only SharkBite fitting suitable for use with polybutylene tubing is our polybutylene transition coupling (1/2" and 3/4" sizes only). This coupling is designed to transition from polybutylene to copper, PEX, CPVC PE-RT or HDPE. I have pasted a link below. http://www.sharkbite.com/product/polybutylene-transition-couplings/ Thank you
